Nokia built in email client + GMail = Headache

Here goes the story: Nokia N97/Nokia N96 both using the built in email client, my email account is on GMail, as most of the people out there simply for the fact that the simple interface of GMail combined with the powerful features can not be found anywhere else (my personal opinion). So after configuring the built in client for GMail i try to download my mail. Unfortunately on both phones I am unable to get the last emails and this problem has been going on for a while. The "Updating mailbox" message stays on for a few minutes but there are no newer mails on the phone. After trying whatever I could think of, I decided that there seems to be no solution on my problem, so I decided to drop a line to Nokia Support. And guess what, four weeks and no answer. Just perfect!
I am not sure if this problem extends to other GMail users, but I know I am unable to use the built in email client on my two Nokia mobile phones to check my mail on the go. So what is the solution to this problem and how to read your GMail on your Nokia S60 mobile phone. There are two for the moment:
- Google GMail mobile
- Nokia Messaging 1.1 (link to the old version on N96)
Update: Seems like the built in client started working normally again... not for long, it was just for a few hours and we are back where we started.

I've had this issue before, its a gmail thing, not a nokia thing, same account wouldn't update with outlook either.Posted by Viktor on Saturday, June 27, 2009 07:07
Same thing here, I am using Nokia E71 and with the built in client on the phone I have the problem. But when I access my mail with Nokia Messaging I have no problem. I can not figure it out, how there is a problem with the one while the other works just fine since both are using the IMAP protocol, but there must be a difference somewhere in the software.Posted by Olivier Pion on Thursday, August 13, 2009 09:59
With my N79, the Nokia Email client don't want to check the email each 5 mins as per my setting... It's checking it randomly. I'm still not sure if it's the email client of Nokia or because my email is Hosted with Gmail Apps service... Anyone had that problem?Posted by Aaron F on Monday, September 21, 2009 06:18
I have the same problem with my NOKIA N97, and I don't think NOkia knows how to solve it yet either. I'm going to have to buy another phone since I can't be without my gmail. Additionally, I have NEVER had a problem checking my email online using my laptop or anyone else's computer, so I think it is definitely the phone software. The same problem here. First I thought that I have done something wrong with the setupp, but now I understand that it's something else. I have a N97, who not will update the Gmail with the built in client. If someone can help, pleace...Posted by Bamarlay on Sunday, April 18, 2010 03:27
I have nokia 5800, and the same problem with built in client with gmail. My other mail for exchange for my work email work perfectly well without any problem. Seems this is the issue with the nokia email.SUBSCRIBE
