Orphaned at 11, he became a merchant seaman at 17, and sailed the world - Australia, the Indian Ocean, Borneo, Malaysia, South America, the South Pacific, up the Congo River and the East Indies. Serving on a British ship, Conrad learned English and became an inveterate Anglophile, eventually settling in Cantebury, England and becoming an English citizen. Joseph ConradConrad produced his best known works starting in 1899 with "Heart of Darkness" and ending with "Chance" in 1913.
